Every day, Duke, a patient in a nursing home, reads a story to another patient - a woman with Alzheimer’s. The story, written in the pages of his notebook, recounts a passionate affair between two young people in the 1940s in the American South. These two people, one from an upper-class family, one from a family of lumber mill workers, are kept apart by her parents, who want her to marry wealth. When the Second World War draft splits the two of them up, it seems as though their love affair is over, but that’s only the beginning of this decades long story.
