Dara, a thirteen-year-old Macedonian immigrant, lives in a low-income Toronto high-rise with her father, Robert. Kind when sober but volatile when drunk, Robert struggles to connect with Dara, who prefers speaking English while he speaks Macedonian. During a sweltering summer, Dara spends her days with her neighbour, Georgia, until their friendship is disrupted by a new classmate, Annette. As Georgia grows closer to Annette, Dara's jealousy deepens, and she retreats to the peace she finds underwater.
