In 1950s Oklahoma, a young indigenous woman and her three daughters sign up for the “Native American Relocation Program”, picking up roots and moving to Los Angeles, California. But after a traumatic event leaves the sisters in the care of the state, all three girls are sent to different foster homes, altering the course of their lives drastically. 20 years later, the women are all on different paths and have not been in contact in years. One is a doctor, another an activist who is trying out acting, and a third is moving from mental hospital to mental hospital. Moving between magical realism, satire, and pure drama, How We Stand is a portrait of historical injustice, trauma, and the connections that cannot be broken between us.
