In this exhibition, Sarah-Mecca Abdourahman explores the complexities of memory and nostalgia in her search for connection to her parents’ homelands of Somalia and India. Her work moves between grief and joy, haunting and healing, evoking the bittersweet nature of longing for home. This yearning is woven into multimedia-painted blankets and installations that allude to both nightmares and childhood innocence, examining ancestral trauma activated through reconnecting with personal and collective histories.
Through moments of joy, humour, and care for her younger self, Abdourahman seeks intergenerational healing for herself and displaced communities. Inspired by Warsan Shire’s poem Home and the concept of the “second chase,” the exhibition reflects on diasporic longing and the psychological impact of migration. Blue ancestral figures appear throughout the work as symbols of rest, protection, and presence, offering space for remembering, mourning, and imagining alternative futures.
