Mama’s Broke have spent over a decade in a near-constant state of transience, bringing their dark, fiery folk-without-borders sound to major festivals and DIY spaces across Canada, the United States, Ireland, the UK, Europe, and beyond. Drawing on traditions from their maritime home in Eastern Canada as well as global influences, the duo’s JUNO-nominated sophomore album Narrow Line (released May 2022 on Free Dirt Records) reflects a rich synthesis of styles that transcends borders. The eleven-track record features close harmony duets, commanding vocals, and contemplative themes exploring life’s cycles, blending Americana, Eastern European fiddle influences, and ancient a cappella balladry into an accessible dark-folk sound.
Comprised of Lisa Maria and Amy Lou Keeler, the duo first met on the road and quickly formed a musical partnership rooted in shared values of music, protest, and community. Emerging from travelling, grassroots cultures shaped by DIY ethics and activism, they have built and supported artistic communities wherever they tour. At the heart of Mama’s Broke is a commitment to challenging borders between people, places, and traditions while fostering freedom of expression and connection through music.
