Pressgang Mutiny are Toronto’s renowned shantymen, dedicated to preserving and reimagining traditional sea shanties — the work songs once sung by sailors, whalers, and fishermen across the world. The quartet, composed of Richard Kott, James McKie, Tim Pyron, and Stefan Read, brings these songs to life with rousing choruses, rich harmonies, and infectious energy. They have performed extensively across Canada, the U.S., and Europe, earning recognition as Official Showcase artists at the 2023 Folk Music Ontario Conference and Folk Alliance International.
Blending tradition with innovation, Pressgang Mutiny’s third album, Departure (2025), explores the connections between shanties and modern musical genres through creative collaborations, instrumentation, and sampling. Beyond the stage, they lead workshops, collaborate with shanty singers worldwide, and host The Shanty Show podcast, where they continue their mission to celebrate one of the world’s first truly multicultural musical traditions.
