Tom Wilson, also known as Tehoháhake, is a celebrated Canadian musician, author, and visual artist. His bestselling memoir Beautiful Scars has been adapted into both a TVO documentary and a stage production at Hamilton’s Theatre Aquarius, exploring his discovery of his Indigenous heritage and true identity as a Mohawk man. Over his extensive career, Wilson has earned numerous accolades, including Juno Awards, gold and platinum records, and recognition from the Hamilton Music Awards and the Polaris Prize. His songwriting has been recorded by major artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Jason Isbell, and Mavis Staples, in addition to his own work with Junkhouse, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, and Lee Harvey Osmond.
Beyond music, Wilson has established himself as a visual artist, with exhibitions across Canada including Beautiful Scars: Mohawk Warriors, Hunters and Chiefs and the powerful installation Fading Memories of Home, which addresses the erasure of Indigenous identity in residential schools. In 2024, Goose Lane Editions published Mohawk Warriors, Hunters and Chiefs: The Art of Tom Wilson Tehoháhake. He also founded the Tom Wilson Indigenous Bursary at McMaster University to support Indigenous students. Recognized as a Companion of the Order of Canada in 2023, Wilson continues to use his art, writing, and music to bridge cultures, inspire reflection, and advocate for Indigenous identity and resilience.
