Join us for the final round of the 2024 Fred Pattison Piano Competition. The Fred Pattison Piano Award at the Don Wright Faculty of Music is awarded to the winner of an annual piano competition. In addition to receiving a cash award, the winner will give a public performance the following academic year. Proceeds from the Fred Pattison Award Fund support the annual competition and cash prize. Each of the finalists will perform 20 to 30 minutes of solo repertoire for the 2024 adjudicator Greg Butler and a live audience. Results will be announced upon conclusion of the final round. Finalists will also perform for the adjudicator in a masterclass the next morning. The winner of the previous year's competition gives a winner's recital the day before. The New Orford String Quartet, consisting of Andrew Wan and Jonathan Crow (violins), Sharon Wei* (viola), and Brian Manker (cello), perform "Pizzicato!" This captivating program showcases the diverse ways in which pizzicato, a technique where the strings are plucked instead of bowed, is used to shape the expressive landscapes of string quartet music. Works by Caroline Shaw, Ana Sokolovic and Beethoven. They will be joined by students to perform Mozart's delightful Divertimento in D major. Arnold Schoenberg’s 1912 bombshell masterpiece Pierrot Lunaire in a setting of poetry by Albert Giraud, performed by Western faculty. Performers include Patricia Green, mezzo-soprano, Scott St. John, violin/viola, Thomas Wiebe, cello, Stephen Tam, flute/piccolo, Jana Starling, clarinets, and Stéphan Sylvestre, piano. A roundtable discussion precedes at 7pm, exploring “Pierrot” from several different angles of expertise; moderator Emily Abrams Ansari joins roundtable panelists including Omar Daniel, Kevin Mooney, Thomas Wiebe and French Studies faculty member Genevieve de Viveiros. The Western University Jazz Ensemble is honoured to welcome internationally renowned recording artist and jazz bassist Rodney Whitaker as Artist in Residence. Over a 25-year span, Mr. Whitaker has toured and recorded with a who’s who of jazz artists, including Jimmy Heath, Dianne Reeves, Cassandra Wilson, Diana Krall, Joe Henderson, Roy Hargrove, and Wynton Marsalis, to name but a few. This joint concert with the Western University Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band pays homage to music and composers from the medieval through contemporary eras. The concert opens with English Folk Song Suite by Ralph Vaughan Williams, followed by Swiftriver Passage by Paul Suchan, Rock Bottom by award-winning composer Derek Jenkins, Adam Gorb's Eine Kleine Yiddishe Ragmusik, and closes with Homage to Perotin: the second movement of Ron Nelson's Medieval Suite. More planned program includes Elfin Thunderbolt by Barbara Galbraith; Song for Silent Voices by Wayne Oquin; La Procession Du Rocio by Joaquin Turina arr. Reed; Instinctive Travels by Michael Markowski; plus repertoire featuring the 2023 Winds, Brass and Percussion Student Concerto Competition winner (TBD). Various locations throughout the Don Wright Faculty of Music will be transformed into a gallery that features music inspired by the data collected by the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) as well as other weather and nature inspired pieces. Graduate composition students will be collaborating with engineers from NTP and faculty from Music Performance Studies. There will also be presentations in collaboration with marine biologist Paul Mensink. The evening will culminate in a panel discussion Greg Kopp, ImpactWX Chair in Severe Storms Engineering and NTP lead researchers, seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones who is also the founder of Tempo: Music for Climate Action, and Kevin Mooney from Don Wright Faculty of Music. Performers planned as of June 2023 include: Western Viola Quartet; Saxophone Duo; cello and piano duo (Thomas Wiebe and Angela Park); Clarinet, trumpet, trombone trio (Jana Starling, Aaron Hodgson, Denis Jiron); String Sextet (Scott St. John, Yvonne Lam, violins; Annemarie Moorcroft, Sharon Wei, violas; Mischa Meyer, cello) Additional performers TBA, subject to change. We are proud to host the NATS Regionals - Great Lakes Region auditions at Western University this year, with an estimated 150 students and their families, along with pianists, coaches, adjudicators, and teachers expected to attend. Opera at Western presents Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring, a charming comic opera that is a wonderful story for all ages and families. Albert is a young man who is offered the honour of becoming the "May King" after no one appropriate can be found to be the May Queen in a small community. But there are of course many little problems and characters along the way with issues and relationships that make for an amazing and humorous story. Sung in English.
