This holiday season will be even brighter, merrier and more colorful as Magic of lights transform the Fanshawe Conservation Area, for the first time ever, into a vibrant drive-through holiday-themed light display.
The TAP Centre for Creativity presents Mohawk Warriors, Hunters & Chiefs, a solo exhibition by Tom Wilson tehohåhake. A celebrated musician and writer, Wilson explores his Mohawk heritage through painting, expressing Indigenous resilience and trauma. The exhibit features Fading Memories of Home, an installation inspired by his family’s experiences with residential schools. Opening Reception The opening reception for this exhibition will take place on November 14th from 7 PM - 10 PM. This event is free and open to the public. Artist Tom Wilson tehohåhake will be in attendance. All are welcome to attend and no advance registration is required. Prior to the reception with Tom, we will be the host site for the launch of VENUExVENUE. Indie Week organizer Darryl Hurs will provide highlights of the music festival & conference weekend, and there will be a short presentation by guest speakers (6 PM to 7 PM). Join for the screening of Beautiful Scars, a Canadian documentary film directed by Shane Belcourt and released in 2022. Starring musician Tom Wilson and based in part on his 2017 memoir of the same name, the film depicts his exploration of the Mohawk heritage that was hidden from him by his adoptive parents, including his process of reconnecting and building a relationship with his birth mother after learning about this secret in his 50s. The film premiered at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and received a Canadian Screen Award nominations (Best Biography or Arts Documentary Program or Series, Best Direction and Best Picture Editing in the Documentary Program) at the 11th Canadian Screen Awards in 2023. Following the screening we will move into conversation with artist Tom Wilson and director Shane Belcourt. Our conversation will be moderated by Josh Lambier, artistic director of WORDS.
