Originally conceived as a simple exercise in painting the portrait of a close friend and fellow artist, Geleynse's project soon grew into something larger. As more friends and acquaintances from his daily life stepped forward—from the person who prepares and serves his coffee, to colleagues from the arts community, a shopkeeper at his local stereo shop, co-workers at the Mission Store where he volunteers twice a week, and the woman who cleans the building that houses his studio—various members of his community became subjects, each captured in paint on paper. With forty-one portraits completed, a full series emerged from that initial intention.
This series of portraits is presented one or two at a time for a month, beginning at Milos Craft Beer Emporium from last September to December and continuing now at TAP Centre for Creativity. It’s an unusual method of exhibiting work, but one that closely mirrors the way people are encountered in everyday life—a casual, passing presence. This approach serves as a gentle reminder that communal time together is, by nature, slightly fragmented.
