  • Sports and Recreation at Western University (part of Student Experience) is hosting our inaugural “Stay in the Game” one-day conference aimed at promoting the continued involvement of women in sport beyond graduation in a variety of roles, on Saturday, March 28. It will be hosted at Brescia University College, on the Western Campus, and registration is now open at www.westernmustangs.ca/conference

The conference features Keynote Speaker Jayna Hefford, one of the most decorated Canadian Olympians of all-time, winning multiple medals at the Winter Olympics and IIHF World Women's Championships as well as titles in the National Women's Hockey League and Canadian Women's Hockey League. In 2019 Hefford was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. Hefford is currenlty the leading Operations Consultant for the Professional Women's Hockey Players' Association.

There will be two panel discussions featuring women who continue to be involved in sport locally, nationally and internationally as coaches, board members, administrators, journalists, officials and athletes. These role models for young women in sport will share insight to why they chose the paths that they did, and the benefits and challenges of remaining involved in sport, through their personal experiences and stories.

Breakout sessions will cover a range of topics pertaining to women working and volunteering, including: athlete identity and transitioning to a different role, work-life balance, building confidence, dealing with conflict, mental health and self-care, leadership, women on sport boards, professional development, and safe sport.

Thanks to our presenting sponsors: Tourism London and the Western Mustangs

The conference is aimed at giving young women and their mentors an opportunity to explore further the many ways they can continue to be involved in the sport world. Registration includes lunch. Spaces are limited.
