      Jonathan Forrest “Block Party” | September 20 – October 25, 2025
Opening Reception: Saturday, September 20 from 7 PM – 9 PM, in collaboration with Nuit Blanche London

Jonathan Forrest’s September/October exhibition features new abstract paintings, marking his sixth solo show with the gallery. Working within a Modernist tradition, Forrest’s latest abstracts push the boundaries of his practice, creating works that are self-referential, open, thin, clear, and flat, with no illusions of space or subject.

Through multiple layers of pulling, dragging, scraping, and staining paint, Forrest builds luminous grounds that enrich each surface. Repeated thick shapes on top create an illusion of both depth and texture. The blocks of shapes hint at representational objects, such as architectural elements or patterns. Forrest’s approach emphasizes both colour and composition as a reflection of the real world, serving as a subconscious response to his immediate environment and as a mirror to past paintings—“picking up a loose thread from the past.”

Colour dominates the exhibition, with patterned, layered, thick, thin, washed, and blocked surfaces. Forrest’s electric use of colour is generous and painterly, inviting viewers into the work. The opening reception on September 20 offers an opportunity to experience the exhibition in person and celebrate the launch of this new body of work.
