Rhythm and Dance of India

Celebrating 30 years and counting, ground-breaking musical collective Toronto Tabla Ensemble (TTE) are set to bring their award-winning and JUNO-nominated sound to London this summer. The concert and Q&A, Rhythm & Dance of India, will take place August 6th at the Grand Theatre’s Auburn Stage, and — due to the intimate setting — a limited amount of tickets are available now!

As part of the celebratory launch of the Tabla Ensemble’s expansion in London, the evening will showcase the performance of Toronto Tabla Ensemble alongside Labonee Mohanta’s Kathak Dance Troupe. Guest performer George Koller will join prolific TTE founder and artistic director Ritesh Das as the Ensemble whisks audiences on a journey through songs from their ‘Best Global Album’-nominated albums — including TTE’s latest release, For the Love of Tabla (2022).

In addition to an Q&A with the audience, Rhythm & Dance of India will also feature a lecture demo on how Tabla rhythms work, and how its incorporated with other forms of music — as well as an introduction to Kathak Dance, which is one of eight classical Indian dances that shares similarities with Flamenco and Tap.

Over the last three decades, TTE has wowed audiences playing some of the biggest stages around the world. As they’ve brought their intricate music to the masses, TTE has won and been nominated for numerous creative awards — including the Global Music Award for Outstanding Achievement in composition, the Independent Music Award for Best World Traditional Song, and a JUNO Award nomination for their enigmatic record, Firedance.

With a myriad of accolades under their belt, Ritesh Das and TTE continue to weave their art far and wide as a way of entertaining, uniting, and educating listeners.

With the recent unveiling of their eighth studio release, For the Love of Tabla, Das continues to put the tabla — a twin-hand drum popularized in northern India during the 18th century — in the spotlight.

“Normally the tabla gets lost or buried under all the other instruments in a song,” Das explains. “For this album, I mixed each track to bring the tabla up so you can hear it prominently within all the other sounds.”

Now audiences in London will get a chance to be up close and personal to the delightful music device to learn and experience first-hand its immersive sound; Toronto Tabla Ensemble’s Rhythm & Dance of India will take the stage at London’s Grand Theatre – Auburn Stage this August 6th at 7:00pm. Tickets are available now!
