London Symphonia - A Question of Balance

While his writing for other instruments was exquisite, it was his writing for winds that Mozart truly transformed the world of Western Art Music. It was to Mozart’s Gran Partita that a fictional Salieri referred in uttering his famous line, “It seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God,” in the film Amadeus.

Igor Stravinsky also broke new musical ground with his Octet for Winds, an intentional update on the classical traditions of music in the German tradition. Moving on from the so-called Primitivism of the Rite of Spring, this piece marks the beginning of his Neoclassical period, an attempt to revisit the grace, balance and restraint that was Mozart’s gift to the world.
