The show: The unsuspecting Birling family are visited by the mysterious Inspector Goole who arrives just as they are celebrating an engagement. The Inspector reveals that a girl called Eva Smith has taken her own life by drinking disinfectant. While horrified, the family are initially confused as to why the Inspector has called to see them. What follows is a thrilling investigation through which the family discover that they are all in fact caught up in this poor girl's death.
Directors Quote: The beauty of An Inspector Calls is that it’s message, of our shared responsibility toward others, is timeless. The play’s inherent themes and the injustices visited upon the girl at the centre of the story, driven to suicide, by her circumstances, is the same whether it happened in 1912 England or in present day London Ontario. Priestley’s clever who-done-it draws the audience into each character’s moral reckoning, and prompts us to reflect on our own, leaving the door open for atonement.
