Secrets of Radar Museum

Want to learn more about the top-secret side of World War II? The Secrets of Radar Museum tells the story of the thousands of Canadians who served in all aspects of radar. Everyone involved was sworn to secrecy - not even allowed to tell their loved ones about their involvement until the Official Secrets Act expired in 1991! The museum features a number of impressive physical exhibits as well as a large research archive that helps tell the story of one of the most important aspects of the Second World War, that, until recently, nobody was allowed to know about.

This museum, dedicated to honouring those who have made lasting contributions in medicine, celebrates close to 150 Canadians whose contributions advanced the medical field in Canada and around the world. The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame also works to encourage and inspire the next generation of Canadian medical heroes through class trips and their “Museum School” program.

Banting House

Did you know that the birthplace of insulin is right here in London, Ontario? Banting House, the former home of Sir Frederick Banting, is credited as the birthplace of the lifesaving discovery of insulin. Take a guided tour of the museum and National Historic Site while taking a step back into the 1920’s to learn more about the medical discovery that helped to save the lives of millions of people around the world. Don’t forget to grab a photo in front of “The Flame of Hope” monument outside the house. This eternal flame will burn until a cure for diabetes is found.

Eldon House

Uncover the mystery and charm of the Eldon House, London's oldest residence. Overlooking the forks of the Thames River, this 1834 home has been passed down through four generations of the Harris family and holds rich history and tradition. Stepping through the front door is like going back in time, as the home and the decor has hardly changed since John and Amelia Harris and their seven children first lived there. Explore the historic property at your own pace with a self-guided tour and be sure to take a stroll through the beautiful gardens outside which have been re-created just the way the Harris family kept them.

Fanshawe Pioneer Village

If you’re looking for a broader look into London in the 19th century, then the Fanshawe Pioneer Village may just be the place you need to visit! Focused on the rural communities and townships of London and the surrounding area from 1820-1920, Fanshawe Pioneer Village is where the past is present. The village is split up into four different time periods that allow you to travel through the different eras of the London’s history. You can experience hands-on demonstrations, like learning to make your own yarn and seeing how laundry was done in the 1800s! New this year, you can visit London’s historic fugitive slave chapel. Dating back to 1848, the chapel was the London stop on the underground railroad, a clandestine network of Black and White activists who helped slaves in United States escape to find a new life in Canada.

ska-nah doht village

Working to educate and preserve local First Nations history, the Ska-Nah Doht Village is a must visit in London, Ontario. Explore a replica longhouse village (one that the Haudenosaunee lived in nearly 1,000 years ago) and imagine yourself making a clay pot or grinding corn into flour with a mortar and pestle. There’s even a spot for bird and wildlife watching. Afterwards, make sure to head inside and take a trip through the museum. It features hands-on exhibits and displays with artifacts from their archaeological collection.

Museum of Ontario Archaeology

Another look into London’s past can be found at the Museum of Ontario Archaeology. Working to understand and interpret the human occupation of Southwestern Ontario over the last 13,000 years, the main gallery takes you on a journey back in time to what life would have been like in the area at the end of the Ice Age, all the way up until European settlers arrived, including a specific exhibit focused on First Nations culture over the last 1,000 years. They have a public archaeology lab where you can learn about how artifacts go from the ground to being displayed in the museum. This museum is bound to have something that everyone digs!

Museum London

Calling all art history lovers! Museum London promotes regional art, culture and history all in one place. Situated on the forks of the Thames River, the building’s many windows give you a spectacular view of the river that you can’t get anywhere else in the city! The museum’s art collection is extensive, with over 5,000 regional and Canadian artworks and more than 45,000 artifacts resulting in a variety of exhibits throughout the year, each with differing themes. The possibilities of what you might see are nearly endless, meaning that no matter what type of art you are looking for, you’ll be able to find it at Museum London.

London Children’s Museum

What about a history experience that’s geared towards the kids? London has that, too! The London Children’s Museum allows the little ones to learn about and explore history and culture in a hands-on, fun way! The kids can learn to dig for dinosaur bones, become a teacher in a one room schoolhouse, crawl through an igloo and blast off to another planet in a spaceship! These exhibits are sure to make for a fun day of exploring for the kids and maybe even the kids at heart, too!

Labatt Park

Did you know that London’s Labatt Memorial Park is the oldest continually operating baseball grounds in the world?! It’s even in the Guiness Book of World Records! You can take a tour of this historic ballpark (which dates back to 1887) and imagine yourself rounding the bases after hitting a home run or do your best Vin Scully or Harry Carey impression from the press box. The tour will take you throughout the ballpark, including into the Roy MacKay Clubhouse (built in 1937) where you'll be able to see some historic baseball artifacts. This is a can’t miss stop for the sports lover!

London Music Hall of Fame

Calling all music lovers! London, Ontario is Canada’s first and only UNESCO City of Music. This unique designation is certainly backed by a rich musical history. The London Music Hall of Fame honours local musicians and their outstanding musical contributions. Touring the Hall of Fame will give you a unique perspective into the musical talent from London’s past and you’ll learn about the inductees through their biographies while enjoying musical treasures and artifacts along the way!

All these great museums and exhibits tie into the rich history and culture that exists in London, Ontario and the surrounding area. It doesn’t matter what type of history buff or art lover you are, or if you’ve just started exploring new interests, there is bound to be a museum that will have you looking to learn more!

Savour the holidays with a lavish feast for you and your loved ones at the Armouries Grille! Enjoy an offering of seasonal flavours at their annual buffet. Options range from hot and cold dishes, omelettes, a breakfast bar, prime rib, seafood, a kid’s station and many other favourites. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. with the last seating at 2 p.m.

Still wanting more buffet? Take the family for a delicious annual Christmas Day brunch at Vic’s on Wellington. Try the AAA prime rib, roasted turkey, homemade stuffing and plenty more – yule be glad you did! Brunch takes place between 11 a.m. – 2p.m.

Switch up your festivities with a Mediterranean twist at CHICKPZ. Step out of the winter wonderland and into a variety of warm dishes featuring a chicken shawarma bowl, falafel bowl, steak kebob bowl and many more options. Make sure to get there before they close at 8 p.m.

London’s many hiking and walking trails transform into a winter wonderland during the colder months. Bundle up and experience the great outdoors at your own pace in Medway Valley Heritage Forest, Westminster Ponds or Springbank Park. Each one offers a variety of different trails and the opportunity to spot some unique birds and other winter wildlife.

If you’re looking for something at a faster pace, there are many outdoor thrill-seeking options to choose from. Boler Mountain is the ultimate one-stop shop for outdoor winter adventures, offering skiing and snowboarding for alpine enthusiasts of all ages and abilities. If skiing and snowboarding isn’t for you, then slide over to their tubing runs where you can hop on an inner tube and let gravity do the rest. Hold on tight as speeds can reach up to 70 km/hour! Their indoor chalet is a perfect place to warm up and watch all the outdoor excitement or grab a bite to eat.

Want to go skiing without the hills? Why not try cross-country skiing at Circle R Ranch? Enjoy the winter landscape on their 13 km of groomed skiing trails. If you prefer something at a slower pace, they also offer snowshoeing!

And don't worry, if you don’t have your own equipment, both Boler Mountain and Circle R Ranch offer equipment rentals.

Want the thrill of the hills without the skis? Then tobogganing with your friends and family might be just the perfect activity for you! There are many parks in the city with hills that are perfect for some tobogganing fun. Some of the best parks with hills to slide down include Basil Grover Park and Doidge Park.

After a morning of fun and adventure, you will have worked up an appetite for lunch! For a quick sandwich or burger on the go, head to BTRMLK or Beach Boy Burger. Their savory sandwiches will have you licking your lips with each bite. If you’re looking for more of a traditional sit-down option, The Squire Pub & Grill and El Poco Lobo offer a variety of sandwiches, salads and tacos that will be sure to fuel you up for the afternoon ahead.

Are you looking for some indoor fun for the kids? Visit one of London’s many indoor play areas like Play Away Indoor Park, The Factory or Funvilla. These indoor playgrounds have tons of fun options such as indoor jumping pillows, high ropes courses, wall climbing, huge play structures, virtual reality games, arcades and more! These will have the kids (and the kids at heart) bouncing off the walls with excitement!

If you are looking to climb up the walls instead of bouncing off them, then Junction Climbing Centre is the place for you! This full-service rock-climbing centre is the largest in the city and is great for climbers of any experience level. From the moment you step inside, it’s wall-to-wall and floor to ceiling fun with climbing options. They have many automatic belay routes of varying difficulties where you can clip yourself in and head up as high as you dare. If you want to climb but stay a little closer to the ground, then try out their bouldering wall! No matter which type of climbing to do, Junction Climbing Centre will not leave you hanging when it comes to excitement.

Do you wish that golf season didn’t have to end when the snow flies? In London it doesn’t! Pack your clubs, book your time slot and stay in the swing of things at one of the city’s indoor golf simulators at The Club House or Extreme Indoor Golf. Is indoor mini golf more of what you’re looking fore? The Club House also offers mini golf and Fleetway’s glow in the dark course makes for a unique and fun experience!

If you are looking for something to do at a slower pace, spend the afternoon exploring the beautiful art and culture at Museum London. For the history buffs, go back in time and learn more about the area’s local military history at The Royal Canadian Regiment Museum or stop by The Museum of Ontario Archaeology to get a glimpse of what it was like in Southwestern Ontario 13,000 years ago. All of these options will let you explore the art and history of London, while staying warm!

After a full afternoon, it’s time for dinner! If you are looking for some international options, try Massey's Fine Indian Cuisine or Dimi’s Greek House for a meal that will transport your tastebuds to a different country. If you’re in the mood for great pasta, head to Fellini Koolini’s or Abruzzi Ristorante for some authentic Italian eats. For more of an intimate atmosphere, try Old South Village Pub. Their cozy restaurant in the heart of Wortley Village is the perfect place to wind down the day, and with an extensive menu of traditional favorites, they will have something for everyone, even the pickiest eater in your family!

After dinner there is still plenty of time to keep the fun going! You can lace up your skates and visit one of London’s outdoor rinks for a nighttime skate. Enjoy the lights in every direction as you skate in Victoria Park or take in the hustle and bustle of the downtown at Covent Garden Market’s Rotary Square rink. If you are looking for a family friendly skate, a 250-meter outdoor skating path winds through the play area at Storybook Gardens. And be sure to grab a hot chocolate and delicious pastry from their rink-side Beavertails concession stand!

If you’re looking to keep the excitement level up in the evening, then Palasad SocialBowl is where you need to go for the night. They have lots of fun indoor options like bowling, billiards, arcade games and escape rooms. If you work up an appetite, their restaurant has plenty of great options to fulfill your evening hunger!

Maybe a low-key evening out is more your style? We recommend taking in a show at the historic and newly renovated Grand Theatre London. This downtown cultural centre has a full playbill of great shows running throughout the winter season. While you’re there, be sure to enjoy one of their giant chocolate chip cookies!
