Covent Garden Market in the heart of downtown London, open seven days a week, is an urbanite’s dream market – and a great place for visitors to gather up brunch items such as gourmet coffee, homemade scones, artisan cheese, speciality teas, or Asian spring rolls for a picnic brunch. While there, rub elbows (it’s busy) with locals buying fresh produce, fruit, fish, bread and meats from generations of farm families. I wished my car came standard with a fridge, or at least a cooler.
Instead of buying perishables, I headed to the artisan wing and perused handcrafted ceramic coffee mugs, kids clothing, cool flower arrangements, pottery and filled a bag with novelty candy to take home as gifts. Tres chic. Even the architecture of the market building, rebuilt in 2000, has a contemporary flare reminiscent of the original 1883 structure that once housed live cattle, a saw dust floor and the occasional snake oil salesman. Times have changed, for the better. (130 King Street, London, www.coventmarket.com)
