Idlewyld Inn

By Doug English

Idlewyld Inn

From the verandah stretching across the front to the tree-shaded patio out back, the message the Idlewyld Inn seems to send is “Relax.’’

The big yellow brick mansion sits well back from the street in a quiet, largely residential neighborhood of old south London.

It was built in 1878 as a private home for Charles Hyman, mayor of London and a member of Prime Minister Wilfred Laurier’s cabinet.

Most of the building is original — innkeeper Christine Kropp says the third floor reminds her of her grandmother’s house. Think high ceilings, rich woodwork, stained glass and leaded glass, five original fireplaces, and Paul Peel prints on the wall in the parlour.

The wallpaper in the private turret dining room is leather because the Hyman family owned a tanner.

There are 23 guest bedrooms, most with queen-size beds and flat-screen TVs. A main-floor one contains what used to be the study of Charles Hyman. Rates start at $129 per night, including full breakfast.

The main dining room, originally a ballroom, was redone in 2006 and is open to the public for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, and for afternoon tea on weekends
