Museum London

Museum London

Museum London’s appeal goes beyond its walls.

Look out the Sculpture Gallery’s floor-to-ceiling windows. “The best view of the Forks of the Thames in the city,’’ says one staff member.

She’s right. There’s Marjorie Blackburn’s fountain going great guns, sending jets of water arcing over the muddy Thames.

Below, in the Wolf Sculpture Garden, is an unusual piece of art. “As the Crow Flies,’’ by Ron Benner, depicts sites along the meridian of longitude 81.14 located on bodies of water due south of London, including Port Stanley, Cape Sable, Fla., and the Bay of Pigs, in Cuba.

Images of these sites are accompanied by photographs and plants indigenous to each region.

“Young people are very attracted to this,’’ my guide says.

Speaking of which, The Learning Lounge was launched last fall so children can take a break and explore their own creativity.

There are toys and buckets of arts and crafts materials, tiny tables and a colourful carpet where the kids can sit, and couches nearby for the grownups.

Museum London has a permanent collection, but also mounts about 20 exhibitions a year. As well it runs art classes for adults and children, summer camps, and holds film screenings.
