Here’s a tip about the Labatt Brewery Tour: Don’t book it for 10 o’clock in the morning.
I’m a dedicated beer drinker, but that was still a bit early to take advantage of the sampling session that comes with the $10 fee.
A guided tour takes two hours. They’ll do it for groups or a single person. Headsets let you hear the guide and are protection in the noisy bottling area. Safety glasses are provided and shoes must be flat, with both the toes and the heel closed. In other words, no sandals.
It’s amazing what goes into a case of 24. They brew 10 to 12 times a day, producing three million or more bottles each day. In 1847, when the business started at the current location, founder John Kinder Labatt cranked out the equivalent of 1,000 bottles a year.
A stop in the Amber Lounge to taste five of their top brands is followed by a room housing trucks used over the years, including the favourite, a red Streamliner from 1947.
Everyone gets a T-shirt and a discount coupon for merchandise in the nearby Labatt retail store. Sorry, but it’s not valid for beer.
